On Sunday 5th May, the next Masterclass in our series will explore How To… Shake Up Shakespeare with performance coach and former Heartbreaker, Daniel Hawthorne. Purchase your tickets here.

What will the Masterclass include?

Daniel will lead a warm-up and then begin “Physicalising the Text” which involves leading the group through games and exercises to work with the sounds of the words and the poetry, without worrying what the words mean. This will allow you to find your own unique “feel” for Shakespeare.

There will be elements of physical group and individual work, a sight-reading task and an opportunity to share work at the end of the session. We’ll also have a break for refreshments; please let us know if you have any dietary requirements or allergies.

More about Daniel:

Daniel Hawthorne is a talented actor, writer, educator and performance coach with a passion for Shakespearean text. Daniel is a graduate of The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts and The Guildford School of Acting. In addition to a successful acting career spanning over 30 years, Daniel has over 15 years of leading educational experiences from primary school to university level and has twice been nominated for Inspirational Lecturer of the Year. Daniel has worked as a Course Leader for the BA Acting in Stage, Screen & Digital Media at BIMM University’s Performers College, Birmingham. More recently, he coaches at The University of Birmingham and is the creator of the System for Life, using Stanislavski’s System for Actors, to create a life with character and intention.

As an Actor, Daniel has performed in leading and supporting roles throughout the UK, as well as screen and voice-over work and has an abundance of Shakespearian credits under his belt.  His performance as Puck, with Heartbreak in 2004, was credited with “putting meat on the bones of Shakespeare” by the Manchester Evening News.

Daniel is thrilled to be joining Heartbreak once more and looks forward to leading an inspiring and energetic session for everyone who shares his love of performing Shakespeare.

Some of Daniel’s Shakespeare credits include:

A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo & Juliet and Much Ado about Nothing.

What shall I prepare?

All participants are asked to prepare a short Shakespearian monologue, ideally a piece that reflects your casting type. Daniel will spend time workshopping and exploring as many monologues as he can. We’d recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that you can move in around in.
